When unpaid care work falls mostly on mothers, it affects career opportunities, financial independence, and overall equality. There are clear indicators that greater gender equality in the workforce benefits both national and global economies, yet progress remains slow.
Sweden was the first country in the world to introduce gender-neutral parental leave, granting both parents the right to paid time off in 1974. Today, more fathers take leave than ever before, creating a better balance at home and in the workplace. While significant progress has been made, continued efforts are needed to ensure truly equal opportunities for all parents.
On Women’s Day and every day, we support policies that promote gender equal parenting and equal opportunities in the workplace.
