There are many schoolchildren who have special needs, sometimes because of neuropsychiatric disorders such as ADHD or autism. For these children, going back to school might be a struggle. 🎒
Swedish law says that schools should always take children's different needs into account. The Swedish government has given the National Agency for Special Needs Education and Schools the mission 'to ensure that children, young people and adults – regardless of functional ability – have adequate conditions to fulfil their educational goals'.
Here are some examples of what kind of support Swedish schoolchildren with special educational needs can get:
✍️ Access to a dedicated special needs teacher.
✍️ To be allowed to read, write and do maths based on their own abilities – for example, with visual support or separate from the rest of the class.
✍️ Structures and routines for learning adapted to their individual needs.
✍️ Social interaction practice – sometimes together with an adult.
✍️ Adapted physical education (PE).
Some children attend special programmes and special needs schools – this is voluntary and based on an assessment made by a multi-disciplinary team. But many children with special educational needs go to regular schools with support and an action plan developed by the specific school together with the student and their legal guardian.
Parents and legal guardians – or a child over 16 – who feel they/their children don't get the support they need can contact the teacher or the headteacher at the school. If that doesn't solve the problem, the next level – for publicly run schools – is the responsible person at the local council. Then, there's also the Swedish Board of Appeal for Education, an independent authority.
