Captions 🏘️ Today, we give you the Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland!
In the Swedish province of Hälsingland, around a thousand wooden farmhouses with highly decorative interiors have been preserved for centuries – seven of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Collectively, these houses are known as 'Hälsingegårdar' in Swedish. 🌍
With a few of them dating back as far as the 1600s, these houses generally belonged to prosperous peasant families who had made their fortunes through agriculture, livestock farming, logging and linen production. Hälsingegårdar reflect a timber building tradition that originated in the Middle Ages. 🏠
The indoor walls of these houses were often adorned with both paintings and carved elements. Canvas or textile paintings were affixed to the walls and decorations were painted directly onto the wooden ceilings or walls. Special attention was paid to the porch – the house's calling card. 🚪
