Captions Today is the National Day of Sweden! 🎉 🇸🇪 We all celebrate this public holiday in different ways, but one thing is sure: blue and yellow flags will be waving from flagpoles all over the country.
The Swedish flag dates back to the 16th century. It's believed to be modelled on the red and white Danish flag 🇩🇰 , which was already in use by then. Thank you, @denmarkdotdk/Denmark.dk!Â
The colours of the Swedish flag come from our coat of arms, which features three golden crowns in a field of blue.
🇸🇪  From the 1890s onwards, there were flag celebrations on 6 June at the open-air museum of Skansen in Stockholm. These were initiated by Artur Hazelius, founder of the museum.
🇸🇪 Then, in 1916, we started to make 6 June an official national celebration of the Swedish Flag Day.
🇸🇪 It took until 1983 for 6 June to officially become the National Day of Sweden. And it was only in 2005 that our National Day was made a public holiday.Â
The date, 6 June, stems from two important events in the history of Sweden: Gustav Vasa was elected king on 6 June 1523 – which laid the foundation for Sweden as an independent state – and Sweden adopted a new constitution on 6 June 1809.
