⛵ ️The Nordic clinker boat tradition has roots in the Viking Age. It's all about smart simplicity: overlapping wooden planks that create a hull that’s light, flexible and incredibly strong. With a design shaped by harsh conditions – cold water, rocky shores and sudden weather – the boats are made to be fast, stable and easy to repair. 🌊 🔨
These small, open wooden boats have been used for fishing and transportation for over a thousand years across Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Åland. Clinker boats represent a living heritage, proven by use, not hype. People still sail them at traditional festivities, regattas and sporting events.
❤️ The tradition of building clinker boats has been recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity – the result of a joint nomination of this old tradition by the Nordic countries.
